Product
The Fisheries Country Profile Production System (FCPPS) was requested by FAO to support the elaboration of one of FAO Fisheries' department key assets; the Fisheries Country Profiles. It requires several reporting and work-flow components that together constitute a CMS like environment. It is deployed and maintained through the iMarine infrastructure.
Priority to CoPCommunity of Practice.
List proposed solution priority following the iMarine Board priority setting criteria:
  • The target community are FCP editors and authors in FAO, and their global collaborators;
  • The users of the output will be data mangers in FAO, converting the FCPPS reports into FiMES (the FAO XML format), and publishing and integrating these in the FAO web-site;
  • Potential for co-funding is limited;
  • Structural allocation of resources from iMarine has been high, since the development of a CMS has clear advantages for the infrastructure sustainability;
  • Referred in DoW: Yes;
  • Business Cases: BC1;
  • How does the proposed action generally support sustainability aspects: 1. Sustainability of the VREVirtual Research Environment. is guaranteed if it manages to meet FAO technical (XML), organizational (work-flow), and maintenance (converter) requirements. 2. Sustainability of the components supporting the VREVirtual Research Environment. is best guaranteed if similar use-cases can be identified. This was realized in the FishFinder VREVirtual Research Environment.. 3. Sustainability of the infrastructure requires a complete and modern CMS that leverages the additional benefits of operating on an e-InfrastructureAn operational combination of digital technologies (hardware and software), resources (data and services), communications (protocols, access rights and networks), and the people and organizational structures needed to support research efforts and collaboration in the large.: ease of VREVirtual Research Environment. deployment, stability and robustness, interoperability and ;
  • FCPPS is compliant with all FAO FiMES requirements;
  • Re-usability was proven with FishFinder VREVirtual Research Environment.. Specific FCPPS benefits are the work-flow support, which FAO can not offer in it's information system. The compatibility ;
Parentage
Relation to CoPCommunity of Practice. Software: FCPPS is compliant with FiMES conversion tools
Relation to D4S technologies: The templating tool, reporting tool, and workflow suite were developed to support FCPPS.
Productivity
The proposed measures are effective by upgrading the quality of content that is delivered to FAO: Metadata are richer, content can be better reviewed and edited, the format errors are reduced, and the data managers have much better control, oversight, and intervention possibilities in editing work-flows.
Does it reduce a known workload? Yes; the data managers are assisted with the organization of the editing and authoring groups, with technical tools facilitating conversion efforts, and QA tools assuring the correct format of delivered reports.
Presentation
The VREVirtual Research Environment. has been delivered, validated and reviewed by users? The UI Design / on-line help / training material / support features were all documented through TRAC tickets
Policy
Are there any policies available that describe data access and sharing? No. Not needed.
Have the Copyright / attribution / metadata / legal aspects been addressed from a user and technology perspective? No, not needed.
