Face to face meeting , Pisa, 26 June 2013

Present: Donatella, Lino, Edward

Agenda: Discussing the progress and the timing of the contract

Two main deliverables were discussed:

End of Contract: poster/presentation for TDWG meeting in Firenze, October 2013. Edward to contact Yde to see how this can be placed on the agenda. To work towards a presence for an earlier meeting, in Rome in September, which was discussed in an earlier skype meeting, it was felt that timing was not ideal: too close, and especially too close to the iMarine project review. Plan for Taxonomic Name Reconciliation was discussed, and how several actors should be involved. Work from Cardiff in i4Life was discussed: is a comparison of lists, without much detail on how to deal with spelling variations… in the names included in those lists (we should get confirmation on this from people who did the actual work). Discussed possible inputs from Dima, Fabio, Casey, Tony. Nicolas and Edward: advise on how to deal with spelling variations caused by the idiosyncrasies of taxonomic names, to enrich the lexical matching of Fabio. Edward to compile test lists. System will be kind of a workflow, connecting different nodes performing operations – operations are e.g. fuzzifying as per Tony Rees, lexical matching of Fabio, name parser of Dima…

End of project: ‘product’ that appeals to target audience; VREVirtual Research Environment. BioCube, in which different elements now available in the infrastructure are made available. Should cover all the tasks that a biologist has to perform in order to do environmental modeling; giving access to biogeographic data, environmental data, tools for quality control (DBScan; maps comparison), tools for environmental enrichment, modeling, projection. Time to start packaging the individual components that have been developed; create on-line tutorials on how to use the infrastructure to achieve modeling. In the process identify gaps, where infrastructure as originally planned was not implemented.

Contact people in WDC to provide algorithms for interpolation of physical oceanography

For the Project Review in September: we need good documentation on both.
