Agenda

Time: Tue, July 24, 2012, 15:00 - 15:40 CET

  • Current Status of X-Search integration with gCube.
  • Planning of activities taking into account the oncoming minor release and project review.
  • T10.4 activity summary per partner

Participants

  • Pasquale Pagano (CNR) (first 10 minutes)
  • Alex Antoniadis (NKUA)
  • Gerasimos Farantatos (NKUA)
  • George Kakaletris (NKUA)
  • Rena Tsantouli (NKUA)
  • Pavlos Fafalios (FORTH)
  • Yannis Marketakis (FORTH)

Discussion Summary

NKUA(G.Farantatos): Introduces meeting agenda, opens Semantic Search integration topic.

CNR(P.Pagano): Integration activity must be complete before next release which will take place during the end of August or the beginning of September, depending also on the status of X-Search integration. The outcome of this activity will have to be demonstrated in the Project Review in the time allotted for the Semantic Search cluster. Each clusters have equal time assigned to present and demonstrate their results. Since significant amounts of work will be demonstrated by all clusters, and also taking into account the makeup of the review committee, it is very important that the Semantic Cluster also presents results on par with the other clusters. In order to be able to demonstrate results, we must take into account summer holidays, integration and testing and plan accordingly.

NKUA(G.Kakaletris): Adds that more fine grained information about the progress of the integration activity will have to be disseminated within the project.

CNR(P.Pagano): Further points out that a clear plan of the activities for the next period must be presented. (P.Pagano leaves call on account of unplanned obligations)

NKUA(G.Kakaletris): Describes review agenda in more details and underlines that semantics is a major topic. A draft of the agenda will be communicated to FORTH in order to gain more understanding of the structure of the review and the place of semantic activities in the latter.

Technical discussion follows

FORTH summarized current activity status. Up until now FORTH has made some progress in the direction of implementing the X-Search portlet, using dummy implementations in place of the actual digital objects. This version which works with a set of predefined results is operational and can present search results along with the additional semantic information (entities, etc..). Integration with ASL and gRS2 pending.

Interaction with X-Search service is also not complete, as currently all functionality resides on portal side. This will have to be changed and instead follow the scheme already agreed during the 2nd TCom meeting, whereby all processing intensive functionality must be placed in a separate X-Search service and the X-Search porlet handles only result presentation, while communication between service and portlet is performed by means of gRS2.

Additional issues discussed were:

  • Representation of results provided by ASL RSConsumer to X-Search portlet: Currently the results are provided in HTML format. NKUA will change this to XML so that the X-Search portlet will be able to extract individual fields from the XML structure.
  • Result presentation: Currently the X-Search portlet presents the whole record. The end result might not look good if there are many records with many fields involved. Since no specific presentation policy is enforced, FORTH will change presentation to include only information which are important for semantic search, while still being able to obtain the full representation of the digital object.
  • NKUA will perform the modifications necessary in order to include the search query in the ASL session.

On activity planning:

Both partners agreed to intensify the integration activity. The first action is FORTH to have a fully operational portal node with search running on it. In parallel, NKUA will implement the remaining needed functionality (ASL modifications and redirection support in the Search portlet). Then, during the coming days FORTH will focus on developing the X-Search Service. Furthermore, communication between partners will be in every day basis using real-time communication. Representatives from NKUA were assigned to aid and support in the usage of ASL and gRS2 (R.Tsantouli and A.Antoniadis respectively). Lastly, in order to improve coordination NKUA and FORTH will organize another conference call next week to discuss activity progress.

On T10.4 activities

Discussion was mainly around the contribution of FAO in T10.4. While the contribution of the latter is included in the reports submitted by FORTH, no report has been submitted by FAO itself up until now. FORTH summarized the involvement of FAO in the task, stating that it took place mainly during the first months of the project and concerned activities related to X-Search operation over FIGIS/FLOD, as described in the reports of FORTH. However, since the activities should be reported by all involved partners, FORTH as task leader of T10.4 agreed to coordinate activity reporting in such a way in the future.

Actions

  • FORTH and NKUA will improve communication in order to intensify activities. Real-time communication will be preferred.
  • NKUA will implement the remaining minor features (ASL RSConsumer XML support and redirection support in Search portlet).
  • FORTH will work on X-Search service and its communication with the portlet in the coming days.
  • NKUA will communicate the draft agenda of the project review to FORTH.
  • Additional technical conference call to re-assess activity progress to be held next week, preferably on Tuesday July 31st.
