Conference call meeting notes

  • date: 26 July 2013
  • Topics: brief Nicolas on meeting of 26 July (which he was not able to attend)
  • Participants: Nicolas Bailly, Anton Ellenbroek, Casey Aldemita, Edward Vanden Berghe

Notes

  1. Environmental enrichment
    1. Need for a (very temporary) focus group for our conversation with NODC (Silver Spring) is confirmed. NB suggests inviting also Julien or one of his colleagues to join. Others for the group: GP, Fabrice, EvB. FAO might also be interested (EA to take this up with FAO?)
    2. Matter of scale is very important, and is different in the different dimensions (lat/lon vs depth vs time). Resolution needed depends on size of variation along these dimensions, and will be much finer in e.g. coastal areas.
    3. This group will look for advice from NODC, how they create WOA on the basis of WOD, and check whether there are tools that can be redeployed or made available in iMarine; and in general get advice on doing the interpolation we need
    4. Building/implementing/connecting the tools we need for the interpolation/environmental data enrichment is the next step, and will involve more people than just those of the focus group. IOC, VLIZ and FAO could be interested to join.
  2. Environmental layers
    1. Need to provide a priority list of environmental layers to be included/made available in the infrastructure. Should be based on use cases
    2. NB will develop use case on comparing/contrasting effects of global change on demersal vs pelagic groups of fishes; priority data sets will be temperature, salinity, bathymetry and derived measures, oxygen saturation…
    3. EvB will develop use case on comparing/contrasting effects of acidification on different types of calcifying organisms (Pteropoda vs pelagic ostracods); priority data will be salinity, temperature, pH, aragonite and calcite concentration, pCO2…
    4. NB and EvB will produce a one-pager on the respective use cases; AE will assist us to pull it together, also with the list of data layers hat are already available in the infrastructure
  3. BiOnym
    1. we agreed on the name and spelling of this set of activities of the biodiversity cluster, BiOnym; wiki pages and file names will be updated where necessary
    2. NB made test files available; EvB to test on Fabio’s SpeciMEn.jar; Casey to use as soon as her batch processing facility is functional
    3. Casey confirms report of yesterday on progress with her taxon name matching software (the GSAy approach)
    4. Edward confirms report of yesterday on progress with testing Fabio’s software, and on building a facility to quantitatively compare performance of taxon matching tools/procedures
    5. Rule frame was discussed, including response from IT people yesterday

Next meeting

Nicolas can’t join on 1 August; we can set up a meeting 5 August. The next meeting with the larger group will be in principle 8 August (but by then people from CNR might no longer be available).
